AltBrau is a beer blog, podcast, and brewing project started by Certified Cicerone® and BJCP Beer Judge Tim Decker. Established in 2013, AltBrau emerged from Tim’s homebrew hobby and desire to learn from professional brewers. Over the last 5+ years AltBrau has brewed and blended small batches with California breweries such as Woods, Freewheel, Bartlett Hall, and Tioga Sequoia. Tim has also worked with international brewers including Germany's Freigeist Bierkultur and Belgium’s Antidoot Wilde Fermenten.
In 2016 and 2017 AltBrau collaborated with Oregon's acclaimed de Garde Brewing Co. to create three special releases. These beers (Avenue No. 1, 2, 3) were released to the public exclusively at Brews for New Avenues, Portland's annual beer fest and rare beer auction. The sale of those beers has raised over $30,000 for New Avenues for Youth and their work aiding at-risk youth with food, housing, counseling, and job training.
In an effort to grow the AltBrau brand and begin purchasing equipment, Tim launched a succesful crowdfunding campaign in 2018. Using the Indiegogo platform AltBrau raised over $20,000 in less than 2 weeks. With the financial help of his supporters Tim was able to acquire fermentation vessels and packaging equipment. These are currently being used for upcoming collaboration releases.
In 2018 and 2019 AltBrau was featured at Carnivale Brettanomyces in Amsterdam. This annual festival features many of the world greatest wild and sour breweries (amateur and professional) and occurs throughout the city of Amsterdam over four nights. Tim will return to Amsterdam in 2020 with new collaborations to share.
Tim Decker is based in Oakland, California and is currently housing 20 oak barrels at Shady Oak Barrel House (Santa Rosa CA). The beer aging in these wine barrels will be released by Shady Oak. However… the recipes and final blend were determined by Tim and will serve as proof of concept for AltBrau to transition into a commercial venture.
In addition to homebrewing and building the AltBrau brand, Tim is a sales representative in the SF Bay Area for South City Ciderworks, husband to his wonderful partner Tamara, and an amateur photographer.
